The port of Kiel is switching to electric ferries (photo)

On August 22, in the German port of Kiel on the Baltic Sea, the baptism procedure of the second fully electric ferry, which is operated in this seaport by the company Schlepp und Fährgesellschaft Kiel, took place.

As TTS writes, the Wellingdorf vessel is an analogue of the Düsternbrook ferry, which has been operating in the port since 2021. The ships are 25m long, powered by batteries with a capacity of 1,092kWh, and have 20 solar panels on the roof. Both vessels do not have a backup diesel power source.

The aim of the operator Schlepp und Fährgesellschaft Kiel is to completely abandon ferries with diesel engines. Therefore, in addition to fully electric ferries, the company has three hybrid ferries in its fleet: Gaarden, Friedrichsort and Wik. Another similar vessel is under construction.

Earlier, TTS wrote that passengers will be transported in Canada by electric ferries, the design of which was also worked on by Ukrainian engineers.
