MAERSK INTRODUCES ADDITIONAL FEE OF $1,000 PER CONTAINER WHEN PASSING THROUGH THE STRAIT OF HORMUZ

Container operator Maersk has introduced an additional fee of $1,000 per container carried on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, the company said in a statement, according to the CTS.
The new fee is included in the Middle East Operational Update 40. It applies to both existing sea bookings and cargo in transit, subject to obtaining the necessary permits from regulatory authorities.
The additional charge is on top of the previously introduced emergency freight rates of $1,800 per dry container (TEU), $3,000 per 40-foot dry container and $3,800 for reefer, special and dangerous goods containers.
The emergency rates apply to cargo departing from ports in Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Oman (excluding the port of Salalah), as well as the ports of Dammam and Jubail in Saudi Arabia.
The company’s previous operational update on July 16 already included emergency freight rates, but did not include a separate $1,000 charge for transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Maersk, the contingency rates cover costs associated with alternative routing, possible temporary storage of cargo, additional chartered tonnage and onward delivery once it is safe to complete the voyage. The company notes that the rates may be adjusted depending on the development of the situation.
