Changes in legislation on winter tires in some EU countries

11 October
2024

From autumn 2024, new rules will apply to winter tires in France, Germany, Austria and Sweden.
In the above countries, a tire will be considered winter only if it has the symbol of a snowflake (Three Peak Mountain Snow Flake - 3PMSF). The presence of only M+S marking (dirt + snow) will no longer be sufficient. This change in legislation applies to both passenger cars and heavy vehicles.
From October 1, 2024, winter tires must have the snowflake symbol (3PMSF) in Germany and Austria.
From November 1 to March 31, 48 departments in the mountainous regions of France are required to use winter tires. From November 1, 2024, only tires with a snowflake symbol will be legally considered winter tires. Accordingly, a tire marked only with M+S will no longer be considered a winter tire.
In Sweden, the rules will change from December 1, 2024. For vehicles weighing up to 3,500 kg, winter tires must have a snowflake symbol. For trailers up to 3,500 kg, only M+S marked tires will continue to be recognized as winter tires until December 1, 2029. For goods vehicles (>3500 kg) from 1 December 2024, winter tires on the front and driving axle must have a snowflake symbol. For other axes, only the symbol M+S will suffice. This also applies to the axles of semi-trailers and trailers.
