The number of congestions on German autobahns has increased, the dpa agency reports, citing the ADAC report for 2024. In total, more than half a million major congestions were recorded over the twelve months.
Namely, in 2024, 516 thousand major congestions were recorded on German motorways, which is 12 thousand more than in 2023.
According to the profile organization ADAC, Germans stood in traffic jams for 488 thousand hours, which is 21 thousand hours more than in the year before last. The total distance of traffic jams was 859 thousand kilometers. Although this is 18 thousand kilometers less than in 2023, experts remind that this distance is much longer than from the Earth to the Moon and back. Experts assess the traffic jam situation in Germany as having worsened slightly.
Germany is a country with some of the best highways in the world. However, even they are not able to cope with the large traffic of cars, which, by the way, increased by another 4% last year. The need for further active road construction remains, experts say.
The largest traffic jam last year was the traffic jam on January 18 between Ludwigshafen and Mönchengladbach and in the reverse direction Koblenz - Ludwigshafen. Due to snowfall that day, columns of cars were on the road 77 and 70 kilometers long, respectively.
